Daf 4a: High Holiday Material Alert!

In the middle of the daf, there is a discussion about requests of God made in haste, and the consequences. In the course of that conversation, the gemara brings a verse from Jeremiah 19:5, "Which I commanded not, nor spoke it, nor did it come to my mind." The drash is that "commanded not" refers to the sacrifice of Mesha, the son of the Moabite king in 2 Kings 3 (oh those Moabites), "nor spoke it," refers to the sacrifice of the daughter of Yiftach in Judges and "nor did it come to my mind" refers to the near-sacrifice of Isaac.

First of all, it is interesting that these two actual sacrifices are paired with the near sacrifice of Isaac (though the drash could assume the famous midrash about the actual sacrifice of Isaac). Second, you should check out Rashi's comment, which has a reference, which I have not yet looked at, to Sanhedrin 89b, which discusses the reasons for God's command: Satan's charge against Abraham. This turns Abraham into more a Job figure.

Anyway, possible grist for the HH mill.
