6a: Thinking About Rain

I will never read the second paragraph of the shema "bito yoreh umalkosh" the same way again. I don't know if the old line about Eskimos having all those words for snow is really true, but it is interesting how subtle the different words for the different kinds of rain really are. I know this is becoming a trope of my posts, but I can't help but feel as though the way we live really militates against us understanding the way our sages thought about the weather.

Isn't it also fascinating how it's not just different names fo rain and types of rain, but also how precise they seemed to be about when the rain comes. We may say it doesn't matter if it's the 1st of Marheshvan or the 17th or the 23rd or even if it's Kislev...but it clearly affected so many aspects of life back then-not just the liturgy of the amidah.
