24a: Freedom of Speech

A great story on this amud relates the dissent of Oshaiah, who seems to think corruption in the house of the Nasi of some sort or another is responsible for rain not falling when a fast is declared. His "beautiful woman" metaphor gets him in all kinds of trouble, and "enhanced techniques" are used to quiet him. Interestingly, it is the people who come to his defense, and their answer is essentially, "He's insulting us too, and you don't see us torturing him." We could rephrase this as: Don't hurt him in our name. Don't do what we wouldn't, had we the chance.

I think U.S. citizens could learn a lot from those wise people.

Stop torturing people and telling us it is making us safer.

Amen. The next story also suggests the corruption of the leadership and the triumph of the common man. Rebbi, the nasi, can't bring rain but poor R. Ilfai can. A fitting message after last nights results...
