This new mishna seems to be offering eitza tova to people regarding how many sacrifices to bring. Like our previous discussion on this blog about being sensitive to people's situations, here the mishna tries to advise people not to overextend themselves or put their families at risk by offering too many sacrifices. At the same time, it also tries to encourages those with smaller families who can afford it to offer more olot and less shelamim. This is all based nicely off Deut. 16:17 - "everyone according to what he can give..."
Though there are baseline offerings of both olot and shelamim, the mishna here seems concerned that people may give too much and put themselves and their families' well-being in jeopardy.
This mishna, which argues against excess in the case of those with big families and few possessions and against being cheap for those with small families and many possessions, tries to strike a difficult balance. How do we encourage generous giving by those who can give without making those who can't give as much feel inadequate?
