10b: Like Mountains Suspended by a Hair

The gemarra seems rather self-conscious in reacting to the mishna's assertion that laws of Hagiga and Me'lia are "like mountains suspended by a hair." As if it knows that these laws are not explicit in the Torah, and also not directly derived from a Torah verse. However, in their pilpul, they are trying to give authenticity to accepted Halakhot -- to give credibility to existing practice. Does it really matter in the end if it is m'forash in the Torah or not? I'm not so sure. Traditions gather their own meanings when they are practiced, especially when they become accepted practice by an observant community. In this way they enrich Torah instead of detract from it.
