14a: Heart of Darkness

The hits just keep on coming.

Another intense amud, lots of great aggadah. I just want to highlight this lovely line in about the middle of the amud. The gemara is drashing a long quote from Isaiah 3, trying to figure out what each part means, and to whom is refers. In the midst of that, there is is,

"And every stay of water," This means the masters of aggadah, who draw the heart of a person like water by using aggadah.

What a beautiful image, and a wonderful assessment of the important of aggadah, and its function.

Robert Cover anyone?

In general, this interpretation of the verse from Isaiah again highlights the learning-centric rabbis. The destruction of Jerusalem really meant the destruction of learning on all of its levels.
