Okay, okay. I get it now. We are going to be seeing a lot of purity related material for awhile here so I better just find something else to say other than admit my inability to get worked up about these issues.
In that spirit, I think the purity-based or perhaps learning-based caste system is very interesting. There are cheverim and there are amei ha-aretz, and though everyone is Jewish, we don't really trust that amei ha-aretz. (Interstingly, this caste system seems to replace the Biblically ordained system, in that even priests can be either chever priests, or am ha-aretz priests.) This type of system had gone by the wayside, but of course we have replaced it with other ways to tell whom we trust and whom we do not trust. Denominations anyone?
