22a: The Problem with Being Suspicious

There is an interesting concern voiced on this amud about the effect our suspicions may have on amei ha-aretz. We are willing, at times, to assume the purity of certain items of an am ha-aretz because he fear he/she would hate us if we did not do so. This is an interesting acknowledgement of the social costs of the sorts of punctilious purity practices by the rabbis.

And it is also interesting that Rabbi Yosi seems to be the only one who is concerned about the possible enmity between the two groups. The gemarra seems to accept his critique reluctantly.

Though these laws do not apply in our day, they seem to have carried over into the kashrut realm -- without R Yosi's warning.
