6b: Sex and the Weather

I have nothing too interesting to say on this topic, but it is interesting to me how much of the imagery on this amud about rain is linked with men, women and sex. It may indicate, again, just how fundamental these issues of rain and weather were for our sages.

Or it may indicate that they were horny. But seriously, it seems to me that it all has to do with fertility. Again, I'm no farmer, but I hear that things grow according to a seasonal cycle -- planting in the spring and harvesting in the fall for example. That is similar to the cycle of preganancy -- where the "planting" also takes place and 9 months later you have a baby (or so I've heard). Think of it like an Asimov story -- I can't think of the name of it -- where they are essentially planting human clones in a field and harvesting them to multiply the population. I'm sure that's what Hazal had in mind. (I apologize if this is a bit disjointed, or just plain weird -- 'tis the season!)

Yeah, you should check out my more recent post, where I also mention fertility, and I think you're probably right on this. Or, as I say up there, maybe it's because they have no ability to control either one, and both are absolsutely necessary for survival.
