Not.

Lesson from this amud: never, ever trust an am ha-aretz. (Unless of course, you have the element of surprise...)

I think the whole trust piece is pretty interesting. Though it would seem obvious that we trust other Jews, we don't - especially when they are not living the same way of life we are. There is a JTS podcast on David Kraemer's talk regarding Jewish food. One point he makes in it that has stuck with me is that the history of Kashrut law show that kashrut not only divides Jews from non-Jews, but also Jews from other Jews. We like to think of Halakha as inclusive today, but at its core it is really devicise -- certainly between Jews and non-Jews, and at times between Jews as well.

Is that a good or a bad thing?
